Food Lion Settles Child Labor, Overtime Cases: More than $16 million will be paid in the largest settlement ever reached by the federal government in a wage-and-hour case involving a private employer. Food Lion Inc., one of the country’s fastest growing supermarket chains, was accused of violating child labor laws and failing to pay thousands of workers required overtime. Food Lion, which has more than 1,000 stores in 14 states and is based in Salisbury, N.C., did not admit violations. The company will pay $13.2 million in back overtime and $3 million in civil penalties.
