Downey : City Hall to Close Every Other Friday to Cut Car Trips
- Share via
Downey officials began notifying businesses and residents this week that City Hall will close every other Friday beginning Aug. 27.
Assistant City Manager Lee Powell said the city decided to change its schedule to meet the county Air Quality Management District’s requirements to reduce the car trips employees make to work.
The closing affects about 100 workers, about half the city’s staff, said Christine Stoner, employee transportation coordinator. Instead of working full weeks, employees will get every other Friday off.
City Hall will retain operating hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days it remains open.
The plan does not affect 300 police officers, firefighters and library staff workers who work at other municipal buildings. The police station, fire stations and library will remain open on days City Hall is closed.
Other cities, including Norwalk and Paramount, have also decided to close facilities on certain Fridays, Stoner said.
