TWO FOR ONE: Remember Dodo Meyer? She was so all-pervasive as Tom Bradley’s liaison for the area she was called “Mayor of the Valley.” Now who gets that job under Mayor Riordan? Valley-savvy Riordan, for starters, will have two liaisons. . .one for the better-off West Valley, another for multiethnic East Valley. Unlike Bradley--uneasy north of Mulholland--Riordan will be his own goodwill ambassador. Liaisons will handle constituent problems. Details are in the weekly Political Briefing (B5).
BAD NEWS DODGERS: Rick Dempsey of Agoura Hills was a laugh-a-minute guy during 21 years as a wisecracking catcher in the majors. Life’s not so amusing now that he’s managing the Bakersfield Dodgers in the Class-A California League (C11). . . . What’s so funny about running the team with the worst record in pro baseball?
FEATS OF CLAY: As he turns 40, it’s time for Gumby, the clay cartoon figure, to take stock: Hey, he’s a success, dammit! The swoop-headed green guy has another revival going, a feature film rolling and he’s an art gallery draw (E1). . . . He’s also an enduring hit for Art Clokey, who was a Valley teacher when a student’s film-exec father was impressed by the teacher’s little homemade cartoon.
RELATIVE UNITY: They thank God for reuniting them, recite prayers for those absent and bless the food. Then the Hernandez family--127 strong--gets down to intergenerational business: They party . . . The story of one family’s reunion, and a primer for those who want to plan one. See Valley Life, Pages 12-13.
GREAT IS LESS: Great Western Bank, the Chatsworth-based savings and loan giant, has been battered by falling real estate values and the sluggish Southern California economy. Result: deep cuts in administrative jobs that could send pink slips to as many as 1,800 employees (D1) . . . No change in stock price.
