COSTA MESA — A man died after his car caught fire when he tried to avoid hitting another car on the San Diego Freeway Friday, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was southbound in the slow lane near Bristol Street about 6:40 p.m. when heavy traffic stopped ahead of him, CHP communications operator Linda Zerwolf said.
He lost control when he swerved to avoid hitting the car in front of him and, as he skidded off the freeway, his car burst into flames, she said.
