Domenici at Work, Out of Hospital

WASHINGTON — Sen. Pete V. Domenici returned to work Monday after spending five days in a hospital for tests to determine the cause of steady pain in his right elbow.
The 69-year-old senator cast votes on two judicial nominations after his release from Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
“I am very glad to be back at work,” Domenici (R-N.M.) said in a statement. “I am grateful to the doctors and staff at Walter Reed for all they’ve done to pinpoint the source of this pain.”
Domenici injured his arm during a touch football game with his grandchildren on Thanksgiving 1999. He was told at the time he had pinched a nerve in his neck and has undergone continual therapy and had two operations.
Doctors now attribute the injury to a pinched ulnar nerve in the senator’s elbow. They do not believe that further surgery would help, Domenici spokesman Chris Gallegos said.
Dr. Thomas Larkin of Walter Reed’s anesthesiology and pain management department said it will take several weeks to get Domenici’s medication adjusted to control the pain without causing side effects.
Gallegos said doctors have asked the senator to reduce his workload this week.
