Movies

Humphrey Bogart stars as two of the most celebrated private eyes--Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade--in a double feature at the New Beverly. Director Howard Hawks’ adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s hard-boiled Marlowe crime novel “The Big Sleep” is a great, taut memento of the ‘40s--ribald and dangerous, racy and smart. Bogey also shines as the cynical Spade in “The Maltese Falcon.” Dashiell Hammett’s superb thriller, paradigm of the whole private-eye genre, was John Huston’s classy directorial debut. Better movie literary adaptations than this are rarer than the bird itself.
