Pop Music
One of the grittiest, most soulful voices from the British Invasion of the mid-’60s was that of Animals’ front man Eric Burdon. He’s still tapping his love of American R&B;, soul, blues and jazz in intensely energetic shows with the New Animals, performances documented in a pair of live albums released in the past four years.
Eric Burdon, Galaxy Concert Theatre, 3503 S. Harbor Blvd., Santa Ana. With Creature of Mercy, Highway. 8 p.m. $19.50. (714) 957-0600.

Movies
Humphrey Bogart stars as two of the most celebrated private eyes--Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade--in a double feature at the New Beverly. Director Howard Hawks’ adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s hard-boiled Marlowe crime novel “The Big Sleep” is a great, taut memento of the ‘40s--ribald and dangerous, racy and smart. Bogey also shines as the cynical Spade in “The Maltese Falcon.” Dashiell Hammett’s superb thriller, paradigm of the whole private-eye genre, was John Huston’s classy directorial debut. Better movie literary adaptations than this are rarer than the bird itself.
Humphrey Bogart double feature, New Beverly Cinema, 7165 Beverly Blvd., L.A. “The Big Sleep,” Friday, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, 3:15 and 7:30 p.m. “The Maltese Falcon,” Friday, 9:45 p.m.; Saturday, 5:30 and 9:45 p.m. $3 to $6. (323) 938-4038.
