Dorsey Upsets Fremont

Drew Gibson, the son of Dorsey High boys’ basketball Coach Kevin Gibson, doesn’t hear too many compliments from his demanding father, but he sensed a sign of satisfaction after scoring a career-high 30 points in the Dons’ 75-70 upset victory over No. 2-ranked Fremont in a Coliseum League game Friday at Dorsey.

“You could see it on his face that he knew I played a good game,” Drew said. “He doesn’t have to say anything.”

Gibson, a junior guard, scored seven consecutive points in the fourth quarter when Dorsey (10-4, 2-0 in league) overcame a 10-point deficit. The Dons used a ferocious half-court trapping defense that rattled Fremont (14-2, 1-1).

The Pathfinders had beaten Dorsey by 10 points earlier this season in a tournament game. Donald Wilson added 22 points for Dorsey, which upset No. 13 Crenshaw on Wednesday.

“We knew we had the capabilities of being a pretty good team,” Kevin Gibson said.

Fremont’s only loss this season had come to a team from New York. Terrell Powell scored 21 points to lead the Pathfinders, who were unable to find a dependable ballhandler to counter the Dons’ aggressive trapping defense.

In other boys’ basketball:

Westchester 87, Los Angeles 52--Brandon Heath scored 17 points and Keith Everage added 12 points for top-ranked Westchester (14-1, 4-0) in its Western League victory at home.

Fairfax 114, Los Angeles University 53--Evan Burns had 28 points and Jason Gilzene added 18 for the No. 4 Lions (17-3, 3-1) in a Western League game at Fairfax. Ruben Boykin had 18 points for University (13-6, 1-3).

Corona Centennial 68, Riverside La Sierra 51--J.R. Reese scored 24 points as No. 10 Centennial (13-2, 2-0) won its Mountain View League game at home.

Villa Park 72, Anaheim Canyon 65--Brice Trather had 31 points and 10 rebounds and Sean Phaler had 25 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for No. 21 Villa Park (16-2, 2-0) in its Century League victory at Canyon.

Pomona Ganesha 74, Covina 66--Chris Reaves scored 23 points for Ganesha (13-4, 3-1) as the Giants defeated No. 25 Covina in a Valle Vista League game at Covina.

In girls’ basketball:

Newhall Hart 82, Valencia 61--Visting Hart, The Times’ No. 13 team, blitzed the two-time defending Foothill League champion, 30-8, in the second quarter to break open a tied game after one quarter.

Guards Amanda Patton and Ashlee Trebilcock combined for 56 points as the Indians (16-3, 3-0), posted their 10th victory of the season by at least 20 points. Patton, who made six three-point baskets, finished with 31. Trebilcock, a freshman, scored 25, and sophomore forward Brandi Kimble added 13.

Kimble’s three-point play in the third quarter gave Hart its largest lead, 61-27. Holly Feneht of Valencia (10-9, 1-2) scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half.

Alta Loma 2, Etiwanda 0--Travis Clayton and Alfonso Sanchez each scored goals for No. 3 Alta Loma (15-0-2, 2-0) as it won its Mt. Baldy League match at home.
