Neighbors Evacuate as Crane Teeters Above
- Share via
Efforts to right a damaged construction crane teetering over a Jersey City waterfront neighborhood were suspended as police told about 1,000 residents to vacate their homes.
Crews halted work until engineers from the firm that built the 470-foot crane arrive today, an official said. Repairs may keep residents from their homes for several days, the official said.
The crane is attached to a building that has 18 of 29 stories completed. An apparent electrical malfunction caused the crane’s boom to extend too far, officials said.
The crane operator felt a movement and escaped, authorities said.
