Exit Left or Right

Re “California to Number Exits on Freeways,” Jan. 16: A great idea, long overdue! But why not add another improvement? As approaching exits are shown, mark them not only with their numbers but also with an indicator as to whether the exits will occur on the left or right side of the freeway. I have seen many motorists cross lanes dangerously, or cause unnecessary traffic delays, because they suddenly realized they were in the wrong lane for exiting.

I have seen such indicators only rarely. They should also be placed on surface street signs pointing to a freeway onramp. I am sure many surface street accidents have been caused by similar confusions.
