Indian police charged three Bangladeshis and three teachers from an Islamic school with murder for an attack at an American cultural center in Calcutta that killed five guards.
Police said they were trying to determine the motive for the attack. The Indian government, apparently backing down from earlier claims, said it was too soon to say whether the shooting was conducted by Islamic militants sponsored by its chief rival, Pakistan.
Calcutta police Supt. Shivaji Ghosh said 55 other people had been detained for questioning about Tuesday’s attack, which wounded 20 people.
