Re “The U.S. Continues Its Strategy of ‘Eternal War,’ ” Opinion, Jan. 20: The bad news is that our country’s misdirected effort to end the suffering caused by substance-abuse disease may plunge us into the counterinsurgency business in the jungles and mountains of South America.
The good news is that to further involve ourselves in Colombia’s “eternal war” will surely serve to strike the death blow to any favorable opinion that an already skeptical public holds for the war on drugs. Let us hope that the price of sanity is not too dear.
