Regarding a Nov. 9 letter from Melody McBroom remarking on smallpox vaccination scars on Mexican-born children: Contrary to popular belief, these are the scars of the BCG vaccination, routinely given to infants to prevent tuberculosis. In more than 20 years of practice among Mexican American children I have not seen any smallpox scars in youngsters.
