From Times Wire Reports
A mentally retarded man who spent 20 years on death row for a Las Vegas murder had his sentence eased to two no-parole life terms by the pardons board.
Thomas Nevius, 46, whose lawyers said he knew something “good” had occurred, murmured his thanks as guards led him out of a hearing room after the board’s vote for life behind bars rather than a lethal injection.
No one on the nine-member panel voted against commuting the sentence, although two members expressed concern about Nevius seeking more legal relief later.
