Munitions Found in Afghanistan

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan — Acting on a tip from the local governor, U.S. troops found bunkers, fortifications and tunnels stuffed with truckloads of machine-gun ammunition on a farm in central Afghanistan, the military said Wednesday.
Col. Roger King at Bagram air base, the U.S. military headquarters in Afghanistan, said Oruzgan province Gov. Jan Mohammed Khan alerted U.S. troops about the cache, which was found near the town of Deh Rawod.
The troops needed three trucks to remove the ammunition Tuesday, he said. The ammunition was hidden in two tunnels surrounded by bunkers and “fighting positions” that appeared to be old, King said. The troops used explosives to collapse the tunnels after removing the ammunition.
King said he was unsure how the governor learned about the cache.
Since the fall of the Taliban regime last year, U.S. troops have found dozens of arms caches.
“Every bit we take out of circulation makes this place a little safer,” King said.
