CHRIS MILLER
School: San Clemente
Position: Receiver and kicker
Height: 6-2 * Weight: 180 * Year: Senior
It’s the San Clemente conundrum.
Is Chris Miller a receiver who also punts and kicks? Or a kicker who also plays receiver?
He does it all well, making it hard to tell.
At San Clemente football games, you’ll see Miller pulling down catch after catch. Then you’ll notice him lining up for extra points. And field goals. And going in to punt.
A modern-day George Blanda, he scored every point in San Clemente’s season opener against Huntington Beach Edison.
Miller had a touchdown catch, kicked the extra point and made field goals of 45 and 44 yards in the Tritons’ 13-7 victory.
Miller had similar numbers against Fountain Valley, snaring 10 receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns, making all four of his extra-point attempts and a 36-yard field goal, and averaging 49.5 yards on two punts in San Clemente’s 31-0 victory. His only misstep was a missed 48-yard field goal.
“Usually kickers are just specialists,” San Clemente Coach Eric Patton said. “Chris is an exception to that. He’s a great receiver too.”
Miller has 21 catches for 210 yards and four touchdowns this season for San Clemente (3-0), No. 13 in The Times’ rankings.
Then there’s his punting: He is averaging 42.3 yards per punt, including a 66-yarder last Friday against Aliso Niguel.
Not even Miller knows what to call himself, saying, “I’ve been doing both since my freshman year,” he said.
