Atlantic Ocean Is Overtaken in Kentucky

Well-bet California-based horses couldn’t win while running over off-track surfaces Friday at rainy Keeneland in Kentucky, where Westerly Breeze, at 15-1, scored a surprising win in the $400,000 Walmac International Alcibiades Stakes and Owsley, a 4-1 shot, rallied to win the $500,000 WinStar Galaxy.
Atlantic Ocean, who broke her maiden at Del Mar and won a stake last month at Turfway Park, couldn’t protect a lead against Westerly Breeze, who had finished fourth in the Turfway race. Ruby’s Reception finished second, beaten by three-quarters of a length, and Final Round was third.
Time for 1 1/16 miles in the mud was 1:46 4/5.
Affluent, winner of the John Mabee Ramona at Del Mar in her last start, ran fifth in a six-horse field in the WinStar.
“She warmed up nice and broke good,” jockey Pat Day said of the 6-5 favorite, “but on the second turn she just spit out the bit.”
Owsley finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Snow Dance for her third win in the last four starts. Suya finished third. The time for 1 3/16 miles over a yielding surface was 1:56 3/5.
