She Had It at 14

Since I saw the 14-year-old Reese Witherspoon in her first film, Robert Mulligan’s 1991 “Man in the Moon,” I’ve been watching for the realizations of her potential. The character, the irrepressibility and the determination were all there (“Anything but Dumb,” by Lynn Smith, Sept. 29).
One can never predict what the future holds for precocious child actors, so I, for one, am delighted with what the future held for this one.

I’m not impressed that Reese Witherspoon earns $15 million a picture. What will make me sit up and take notice is when the entertainment industry in this town starts paying its secretarial and support staff more than $10 to $12 an hour.
