Pro-Business Party Leads Parliament Vote

The pro-business New Era party appeared set to win more seats than any other party in a parliamentary election in this former Soviet republic, which is on the verge of entering the European Union and NATO.
With about 96% of the vote tallied, New Era had 23.5% support, according to Latvia’s Central Election Commission. The party, founded less than a year ago by a former central bank chief, had campaigned on an anti-corruption platform.
Of the 19 other parties competing, For Human Rights in a United Latvia was second with 18.8%. The center-right People’s Party, part of the governing coalition, was third with 16.6%, results showed.
