Freeway Murals

Re “Enjoyable Drive Foiled by Foliage,” letter, Oct. 1: As a professional artist, I couldn’t agree more that Kent Twitchell’s murals are some of the best in Los Angeles. However, to remove a healthy tree in downtown Los Angeles, next to a busy freeway no less, would be a criminal act. If those trees were removed, as your letter writer suggests, and “the traffic comes to a complete standstill,” she still wouldn’t be able to study the mural--it would be impossible to see through the smog.

Better the murals being increasingly obscured by trees than permanently scarred by the graffiti that has destroyed most of the masterful murals that dot the city.
