Judges Halt Roadwork Near Development

The bulldozers are quiet once again along Culver Boulevard near the Playa Vista project. Two state appellate judges ordered the developer to halt road-widening to give the appeals court time to review a lower court decision to let the work proceed.
The action at least temporarily halted the work that had started Monday after a Los Angeles Superior Court judge refused to grant an injunction to stop it. The injunction had been sought by a Sierra Club wetlands task force in a suit against the California Coastal Commission and Playa Vista.
The bulldozers could remain out of action through the rainy season. The appellate judges gave the two sides in the dispute until Friday to explain their sides. Regardless of what the court decides, the roadwork must cease Oct. 15, the state-designated start of the rainy season.
