The ageless Stones rolled over all of today’s young hotshots in this week’s album sales race, but they couldn’t generate enough firepower with their hits collection to unseat another classic rocker: Elvis Presley.
In its second week in the stores, Presley’s “Elvis: 30 #1 Hits” sold 337,000 copies to bring its total to almost 840,000. The Stones’ two-disc package of old hits, “Forty Licks,” sold 310,000 copies to debut at second place on the chart, according to figures released Wednesday by Nielsen SoundScan.
Rapper Xzibit’s “Man Vs. Machine,” “American Idol: Greatest Moments” and the pop-punk band Good Charlotte’s “The Young and the Hopeless” also entered the chart this week, at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 7 respectively. Three other artists also entered the Top 20 with new albums: LeAnn Rimes (No. 12), Diana Krall (No. 18) and Floetry (No. 19). The other positions in the Top 10 are held by the Dixie Chicks, Avril Lavigne, Nelly, Eminem and Disturbed.
On the singles chart, Kelly Clarkson’s ballad “Before Your Love” remains No. 1.
