CHP Officer Delivers Baby After Traffic Stop
- Share via
An early-morning traffic stop on the Costa Mesa Freeway was anything but routine for California Highway Patrol Officer Brad Gardea, who helped deliver a baby girl inside one car moments after writing a ticket to the driver of another.
According to the CHP, Gardea had just finished writing the ticket at 6:50 a.m. Thursday at Katella Avenue when a car parked in front of his cruiser. Jose Vasquez ran out, speaking in Spanish, which Gardea does not understand. But Gardea quickly realized Vasquez was saying his passenger, Maria Isabel de Rosas, was in labor.
The pair was en route to a Garden Grove hospital. Gardea helped deliver a 5-pound girl who was about three weeks early.
