Fewer California households can buy median home

The percentage of households in California able to afford a median-priced home decreased by 2 percentage points to 28% in August compared to a year ago, according to a report released Thursday by the California Assn. of Realtors.
Affordability dropped in Los Angeles County to 30% from 34% a year ago, and in Orange County to 23% from 27% in 2001.
At 66%, the High Desert was the most affordable region in the state, followed by Riverside/San Bernardino at 45%. Santa Barbara was the least affordable region statewide at 14%.
