Compromise Reached on Oak Tree Protection

County supervisors approved limited protection for valley oak trees on agricultural land, a compromise after five years of acrimony.
The regulations let owners of large ranches fell up to 19 of the trees every 30 years without having to replace them. They can cut up to 154 every 30 years without a permit, as long as they plant 15 trees for each one removed.
