Jammu and Kashmir Under Federal Control

The federal government assumed direct rule over India’s Jammu and Kashmir state because lawmakers failed to agree on a coalition government after state elections. The temporary move put Gov. Girish Chandra Saxena in charge until state parties agree on a new government.
No party won a majority in the state legislature, and two of them -- the Congress and People’s Democratic parties -- were arguing over which would get the post of chief minister if they formed a new ruling coalition.
