Officer Shoots Man in Struggle for Patrol Car

A Montebello police sergeant Sunday shot a man who tried to grab his shotgun and drive away in his patrol car, authorities said Monday.
The sergeant detained the man about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Montebello and Whittier boulevards, where the man was “acting bizarre” and trying to flag down motorists, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
After getting into the patrol car, the man tried to grab the shotgun and drive off when “the sergeant, fearing for his safety, shot the subject in the torso” during a struggle, the spokesman said. He was hospitalized in stable condition. Neither the man nor officer was identified.
