Catholic Group, Nurses Reach Tentative Deal

A group of California Catholic hospitals and the union representing 4,000 registered nurses reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract Tuesday.
The proposed three-year deal would result in wage increases ranging from 18% to 29%, ban mandatory overtime and improve the nurses’ pension and other benefits, said Chuck Idelson, spokesman for the California Nurses Assn.
Talks between the union and San Francisco-based Catholic Healthcare West, which operates 41 acute-care hospitals in California, Arizona and Nevada, wrapped up at 3 a.m. Tuesday. Negotiations had been ongoing for several months, Idelson said.
The nurses, who work at 11 CHW hospitals statewide, are scheduled to vote on the contract proposal next week.
The agreement also would add the nurses to a master contract already covering some 4,000 other registered nurses.
