Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday signed a bill that will increase fines for illegal dumping.
The law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, increases the minimum penalty for illegal dumping of commercial quantities from $500 to $1,000, and the maximum from $4,000 to $10,000.
The bill, by Assemblyman Russ Bogh (R-Cherry Valley) and Sen. Jim Battin (R-La Quinta), was prompted by increased illegal dumping in the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley.
