Re “Whither California Candidates?” July 25: Virginia may be able to boast eight presidents, but seven of those men had already served before California gained statehood. There are probably many reasons why the Golden State has produced only one president. One reason may be that we are still trying to convince the rest of the nation, including those Enron people, that California is actually part of the union.
