LANDSTUHL, Germany — Former hostage Thomas Hamill was reunited here Wednesday with his wife, Kellie, who brought his favorite cowboy boots, red shirt and jeans from their Mississippi home -- and promised him steak and chocolate cake for dinner.
Hamill, a 43-year-old truck driver for a subsidiary of oil services giant Halliburton, escaped his Iraqi captors Sunday. He has been treated at the U.S. military’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center since Monday.
Hamill was wounded in the arm and struck in the head with a rifle butt when his convoy was ambushed April 9.
In a statement, Hamill said: “My recovery is definitely improving now that my wife, Kellie, is here with me. My only plan now is to go home as soon as possible and spend some quality, private time with my family.”
Hospital spokeswoman Marie Shaw said she expected that Hamill would be able to return home to Macon, Miss., by Friday.
