This is one of the basic postures taught in all styles of yoga. It is often considered a favorite among the standing poses because it offers a challenge for both beginning and advanced students. This move will help stretch your hip muscles while also strengthening your legs and arms.

1 Stand on a firm, level surface and spread your feet to about 4 to 4 1/2 feet apart (or the length of one leg). Position your front leg so your kneecap and toes face forward. Rotate your back foot outward, just slightly. Press your back heel firmly into the floor. Inhale and turn your torso to face your front leg.

2 As you exhale, bend your front knee until it is directly over your front ankle. Raise your arms above your head. Continue to breathe fully as you lift your chest. Initially, you may not be able to bend your knee this far. Remember, it is more important to keep your back leg straight, with the heel pressed down, than it is to bend the front knee to this right angle. Be patient: You’ll improve with practice.
