A distinctive omission

Patt Morrison is a true Renaissance woman and her L.A. Times reports not only cover matters that interest me but also are so well-written they should be required reading for all serious journalism students as examples of how to do it. Naturally, I was drawn to her survey story [“L.A. Ink,” May 13] on L.A. magazines. As usual, she did not disappoint ... as far as she went. Missing from her list was Distinction, the pretentious, bimonthly, high-gloss publication, described, in part, on its website as “a smart, different, new, luxury magazine. For Southern California. Real content. Substance. Affluence. Influence and accomplishment.... “
That it is produced by Angeles Publishing, a division of Tribune Los Angeles, publisher of The L.A. Times, has nothing to do with Distinction’s absence from Morrison’s list, I am sure. Since the magazine has gotten off to a shaky start -- three editors in the nine months since its premiere issue in September 2003 -- perhaps she was not sure it would still be around when her piece ran.
