If jazz is what makes America great, then people such as Elvin Jones make us great. Like Louis Armstrong, he was widely loved around the world at a time when we are loved hardly at all. He will be remembered for his artistic innovations and integrity, his joie de vivre and his tremendous capacity for friendship. We shall not see the likes of him again.
