Surfing Now Allowed as a High School Sport

The Hawaii Board of Education has unanimously approved surfing as an official high school sport in the Islands.

Despite being birthplace of surfing, Hawaii had never recognized interscholastic high school surfing teams, citing safety, cost and liability concerns.

Hawaii public school students had been competing in surf meets as members of clubs. Those clubs can now be official school teams.
