Trials Requested for 29 in Parmalat Scandal

Milan prosecutors have again requested trials for 29 people in the Parmalat fraud scandal, including Calisto Tanzi, the founder of the Italian dairy company, his lawyer said.
The Italian judicial system is notoriously slow, and a judge in March rejected requests for fast-track trials for the same number of defendants in the complicated case, which stretches back a decade.
Fabio Belloni, a lawyer for Tanzi, said a different judge will evaluate the request. A preliminary hearing will probably be held in the fall, and any trial wouldn’t begin before the end of this year or later, he said.
Prosecutors requested trial on charges of market rigging and interference with the work of Italy’s stock market watchdog, Belloni said.
