Turning the American Dream Into Reality
I was delighted to see the update about Maxcy Filer (May 21). As an English teacher to adult immigrants, at the end of each semester I have given them a copy of your excellent May 31, 1991, article about a then-60-year-old Filer who wouldn’t give up in attempting to pass the bar exam. It is the best lesson I can teach about the reality of the American dream.
My students come away from that discussion, awe on their faces and tears in their eyes, with a visceral understanding that although pursuing their happiness in America is not easy, it is possible as long as they persevere. The best lessons I give my students are of those who share with them the real-life experiences of ordinary Americans who put the “I Can” of “American” into their lives. Thank you to Filer.
