A military prosecutor has charged 35 alleged members of an Al Qaeda-linked group with plotting to bomb targets in Lebanon, judicial officials said. Nine of the defendants are in police custody.
Police arrested 10 Lebanese men Sept. 17 in connection with alleged plots to bomb the Italian and Ukrainian diplomatic missions in Beirut, kill diplomats and attack Lebanese security facilities. One of the 10 died in custody last week.
A Beirut military court judge issued an indictment sheet Wednesday laying out the charges against the 35 suspects. Those in custody will be tried by a military court and face life in prison with hard labor. No trial date has been set.
