Bank’s Reputation Now in Scraps

Safe deposit boxes from a Hong Kong branch of Singapore-based DBS Bank were removed by a renovation contractor and crushed as scrap metal, along with customers’ most valued possessions. Embarrassed bank executives said they would take “ultimate responsibility” for the 83 boxes.
It will be difficult to determine what was in the boxes, which typically contain heirlooms and valuables such as jewelry and bonds, but the South China Morning Post said the losses were expected to amount to millions of dollars.
