Prosecutors in New York dropped charges against 227 Republican National Convention protesters whom police corralled in nets and arrested during a peaceful march near ground zero.
“In light of the short duration of the procession, the conduct of the defendants and all the surrounding circumstances, no useful purpose would be served by continuing the prosecution of any cases arising out of the Fulton Street protest of Aug. 31,” Assistant Dist. Atty. William Beesch said in Manhattan Criminal Court.
After listening to Beesch, Judge Ellen Freed said: “All these cases are dismissed.”
