From Rad to Bad

Re “The World Needs Skaters, Not Poser Girls,” Opinion, Oct. 17: I’m inclined to applaud Melissa Larsen’s intent to “build an army of rad little girls” instead of “posers” through her new position with SG magazine. The main reason such focused magazines exist, however, is to serve as vehicles for focused advertising. Corporately, a mass consumer society is pushed that doesn’t foster truly independent, self-reliant individuals.
One has to wonder, if the rad girl moniker works, whether rad girl lipstick and rad girl sports clothes can be far behind.
