Remains Are Those of Man Missing Since ’92

Human remains found in the mountains near Onyx on Oct. 16 have been identified as those of a Salinas man who disappeared while vacationing in 1992, Kern County coroner’s investigators said Monday.
A family friend saw news reports of the discovery and thought the victim might be Peter William Atkinson, 48, of Salinas, said John Van Rensselaer, the supervising deputy coroner. Atkinson had not been heard from since sending a postcard from Ridgecrest on April 17, 1992.
The friend contacted a brother of Atkinson in Alaska, who then contacted another brother, a pilot, who flew to Bakersfield on Friday and identified clothing and other items.
