Doctor gets prison for insurance fraud

A Bel-Air doctor who fraudulently billed insurance companies more than $2 million for unnecessary colonoscopies, “sweaty palm” surgeries and other procedures was sentenced Tuesday to nearly five years in prison.
Mamdouh S. Bahna, 60, pleaded guilty in July to coordinating the fraud through his Bel Air Surgical Institute, said U.S. Atty. Consuelo Woodhead.
Bahna was sentenced to almost five years in prison and ordered to pay a fine. He already has paid almost $1 million in restitution.
William W. Hampton, who also performed “sweaty palm” surgeries at the institute, was convicted last month of healthcare fraud and faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in March.
