TV ratings: Golden Globes hit seven-year high in early numbers

Viewership for Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards, the second year with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler throwing jabs at Hollywood, are likely up from last year, according to early household numbers from Nielsen.
The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards on NBC drew a rating of 14.1 from households in Nielsen’s 56 metered markets, up 8% from last year’s rating.
Though the early statistics aren’t adjusted for time zones and therefore not very reliable, this means viewership could top last year’s Golden Globes, which averaged 19.7 million people watching, according to the final numbers.

Fey and Poehler will return to the Golden Globes stage next year.
Elsewhere, CBS had the big AFC playoff game. The Denver Broncos’ victory over the San Diego Chargers was the highest-rated divisional playoff match-up of the weekend, with a 25.1 household rating, up 5% from last year’s comparable game. The contest ended at 5 p.m. PST, right as the Golden Globes were getting started.
The NFL contest ran into primetime, which will throw off the numbers from “60 Minutes.” “The Good Wife” drew 9.82 million viewers and “The Mentalist” brought in 9.39 million.
Against the competition from the Golden Globes, Fox’s animation lineup was generally down from last week, with “Family Guy,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Family Guy” and “American Dad” all lower.
ABC’s “American Funniest Home Videos,” the “Bachelor” special and “Revenge” were also down from last week, while the low-rated series “Betrayal” ticked up to a 0.8 in the key age 18-to-49 demographic.
