SAG Awards 2014: Matthew McConaughey wins for male actor in a lead role

Matthew McConaughey won the Screen Actors Guild award for male actor in a leading role for his performance as Ron Woodroof, an AIDS patient who smuggled unapproved alternative drugs into the U.S. for himself and others, in the fact-based drama “Dallas Buyers Club.”
Accepting the award, McConaughey gave a passionate speech and said, “There’s a magic place that we as actors can get, or we at least strive to get to. And you know we always don’t get there — but, boy, when we touch it, it’s magic.”
The SAG Award is McConaughey’s first. He is also up for a cast award for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

In claiming the award, McConaughey beat out Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery in “12 Years a Slave,” Tom Hanks as the captain of a hijacked cargo ship in “Captain Phillips,” Forest Whitaker as a long-serving White House butler in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” and Bruce Dern as a curmudgeon chasing a dubious sweepstakes prize in “Nebraska.”
The SAG Awards are considered one of the more reliable predictors of Oscar success, in part because actors represent such a large voting block in the motion picture academy. McConaughey is nominated for this year’s Oscar for best actor.
The 20th SAG Awards are being held at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.
