SAG Awards 2014: ‘American Hustle’s’ David O. Russell, luge coach?

“American Hustle” director David O. Russell walked the red carpet at the SAG Awards separately from the stars of his lauded film.
Michael Pena, who plays Paco Hernandez in the film, walked a few minutes before him, and Jennifer Lawrence — surrounded by a posse of handlers — appeared a few minutes after.
The mood from everyone “American Hustle”-related was very upbeat. The film is an awards favorite, and the cast stood a decent chance of winning during Saturday’s telecast.

“My first day of work I saw Jennifer Lawrence win the Oscar,” said Pena, when asked what things were like during the shoot. “And David O. Russell is sitting in a chair by Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. Suddenly I realized this wasn’t going to be an easy job.”
Russell makes it look easy, though, and that’s thanks to his incredible ability to create multidimensional characters, say members of his cast.
For Russell each new awards show is an honor and revelation, even as they become old hat.
“This is an extra-long awards season,” the director said, referring to the break afforded by the Winter Olympics. “I think I’m going to start a luge team.”
