“The Jungle Book” is still roaring.
After a strong opening weekend in which it earned an estimated $103.6 million in the U.S., Disney’s live-action remake of the studio’s own 1967 animated classic held its No. 1 position at the box office to begin its second weekend in theaters.
The movie, directed by Jon Favreau and starring 12-year-old Neel Sethi as Mowgli, made $16.38 million Friday, according to estimates from Box Office Mojo. Analysts said the film, based on the stories of Rudyard Kipling, could earn $60 million over the weekend, which would represent a drop of around 40% from its opening.
As experts predicted, “The Jungle Book” finished Friday way ahead of its closest competitor, “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” Universal Pictures’ poorly reviewed follow-up to 2012’s “Snow White and the Hunstman” made $7.27 million to start its first weekend in theaters, Box Office Mojo said. According to analysts, the movie is likely to gross about $25 million through Sunday.
At No. 3 was “Barbershop: The Next Cut,” which began its second weekend with $3.1 million, followed by two holdovers from previous weeks: “The Boss” at No. 4 (with $1.9 million) and “Zootopia” at No. 5 ($1.77 million).
