L.A. Now Live: The standoff over the DWP

Join Times staff writer Jack Dolan at 9 a.m. Thursday for a discussion about city leaders’ efforts to find out where $40 million spent over the last decade to improve labor relations at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power actually went.
On Wednesday afternoon, City Controller Ron Galperin announced that he was issuing subpoenas to compel Brian D’Arcy, leader of the DWP’s largest employee union, to show where the money went.
The announcement came only hours after D’Arcy failed to show up for a meeting in Galperin’s office to begin an audit of two DWP affiliated nonprofits that D’Arcy helps run.
City officials began trying to track the nonprofits’ spending after a Times report in September showed the city-owned utility had only scant information on how the money has been used.
Mayor Eric Garcetti and City Atty. Mike Feuer appeared with Galperin at the Wednesday afternoon news conference to demand that D’Arcy comply with the subpoenas and cooperate with their attempt to follow the money.
