Memorial for teacher Rose Gilbert set for Jan. 26 in Pacific Palisades

A memorial for Rose Gilbert, a beloved educator and longtime Pacific Palisades resident, will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 26 at Mercer Hall at Palisades Charter High School.

Gilbert, one of the nation’s oldest teachers until her retirement last February, died Dec. 16 at age 95. She had taught literature and composition at Pali High since its opening in 1961.

The program will feature presenters from several aspects of her life, organizers said.

Gilbert’s influence reached far beyond the classroom. She helped fund the Maggie Gilbert Aquatic Center, named for her late daughter, as well as renovations to the school gym, Mercer Hall and a little theater, renamed Gilbert Hall.

She also was a staunch supporter of UCLA, funding scholarships for scholars and athletes. UCLA’s Powell Library features the Rose Gilbert Reading Room. Her death was observed at Pauley Pavilion, where Gilbert had court-side seats to watch the Bruins basketball team.
