Baseball: Birmingham loses sophomore pitcher to Calabasas

Joey Medellin, a promising sophomore pitcher at Birmingham who was impressive last weekend throwing against El Toro in the JSerra tournament, checked out of school on Tuesday and is transferring to Calabasas.
His older brother, Randy, was an All-City infielder for the Patriots and another brother, Eric, is a senior at Birmingham.
Medellin could have problems trying to play this season for the Coyotes, because first-year Calabasas Coach Thomas Cassidy coached him on a travel-ball team in the fall, and there’s a CIF rule that bars athletes from following their coach.
