Orioles put Yovani Gallardo on the disabled list

The Baltimore Orioles put right-hander Yovani Gallardo on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of shoulder tendinitis.

Gallardo complained of a sore shoulder in his start Friday against the Kansas City Royals and was pulled after two innings and 45 pitches.

Gallardo, 30, has been on the disabled four times in his career but never for an arm issue.

Yankees reliever Branden Pinder has a tear in elbow ligament

New York Yankees reliever Branden Pinder has a partial ligament tear in his right elbow and must decide whether to have surgery.

Manager Joe Girardi confirmed the diagnosis and said that Pinder probably will choose in the next couple of days whether to have ligament-replacement surgery, which would probably sideline him at least a year, or try a rehabilitation program and pitch with the injury.

Pinder was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Also, outfielder Aaron Hicks was sent for an MRI exam on his sore left shoulder, keeping him out of the lineup against Tampa Bay. Hicks left Friday night’s game after jamming the shoulder after diving for Brandon Guyer’s bloop single.

Jacob deGrom returns to the Mets

Jacob deGrom returned to the New York Mets and says all is well with his infant son, Jaxon, after a scare deGrom revealed was a breathing problem.

DeGrom will start Sunday against the Atlanta Braves after bypassing one turn in the rotation because of a sore right lat muscle and another start because of his son’s health issue.

DeGrom says his son had a form of apnea that caused him to stop breathing after falling asleep. Concerns were relieved after Jaxon was monitored for five consecutive nights without the problem recurring. The baby is home with deGrom’s wife, Stacy.

Manager Terry Collins says deGrom may be limited to 85 pitches Sunday. DeGrom threw 71 pitches in a simulated game in Florida on Tuesday.

Umpire is replaced because of injury

Umpire Jeff Kellogg, who left Friday night’s game between the Mets and Braves because of an undisclosed injury, has been replaced for the remainder of the weekend series.

Greg Gibson, who had been in Cincinnati for the Chicago Cubs-Reds series, has replaced Kellogg.

Kellogg was the plate umpire when he was hit by a foul tip in the first inning. He left after the inning. Braves assistant trainer Jeff Lovell appeared to look at Kellogg’s head before the umpire walked off the field. The game resumed with a three-man crew.

MLB spokesman Mike Teevan told the Associated Press that Kellogg is considered day to day and will remain under evaluation. Teevan didn’t disclose the nature of Kellogg’s injury.
